Course Description and Prerequisite

Promotes mastery of college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The course requires students to apply reading comprehension strategies, synthesize information, and communicate ideas and reasoning through formal and informal writing processes. Prerequisite: ENG 095 or placement beyond prerequisite. Four lecture.

Course Content

Course Content will include: Integrated Reading/Writing Instructional Cycles: A minimum of three instructional cycles will include complex and substantial high-interest texts with a thematic focus. Each cycle will include point of view, purpose, tone, style, audience, rhetorical patterns, and organizational patterns. Instructors will utilize the integrated reading and writing cycle: a. Pre-reading; b. Reading; c. Post-reading; d. Pre-Writing/Low-Stakes Writing; e. Writing/High-Stakes Writing; f. Reflection. 2. Active Reading Strategies: a. Activating prior knowledge; b. Annotating texts; c. Producing graphic organizers to organize ideas; d. Using context clues to deepen understanding of unfamiliar concepts and vocabulary words; e. Analyzing the main idea; f. Evaluating for fact vs. opinion; g. Recognizing organizational patterns. 3. The Writing Process: a. Pre-writing; b. Drafting; c. Revising; d. Editing; e. Publishing; f. Reflection.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Evaluate and infer information within texts. 2. Utilize schemata to enhance reading comprehension. 3. Analyze structures and interpret meanings of various texts. 4. Identify and develop rhetorical patterns and organizational patterns. 5. Identify the purpose of audience within texts. 6. Develop a point of view on an issue using textual evidence. 7. Develop writing in a variety of formats, such as essays, summary/response writing, and reflections. 8. Compose writing controlled by an explicit thesis statement. 9. Apply the formal writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing, and reflection. 10. Compose and organize written work to ensure coherence, sentence variety, clarity, and attention to audience. 11. Demonstrate conventions of Standard Written English. 12. Exhibit consistent tone and style. 13. Document sources and format writing using the appropriate style guideline.

Evaluation

You must incorporate the approved assessment methodologies as listed in the course outline. You may develop other methods of assessment, but you must administer the required assessment activities.

Assessment of Course Outcomes will include:

  1. Instructor-evaluated exams, quizzes, and assignments;
  2. 3750-7500 words of informal writing;
  3. A minimum of three formal essays (3-4 pages in length and controlled by an explicit thesis statement)
