3Skeletal Inventory Activity

Instructions

You will want to visit the website below on anatomical position and read the information BEFORE you attempt the activity. This is an activity to test your knowledge on skeletal identification and inventory procedures for your forensic report. Forensic anthropologists always take an initial inventory of all the bones present in their assemblage. This could include all 206 bones, which normally isn't likely, or as few as 10 bones, which you will see when you start the activity. It is very important to make sure the skeleton is laid out in anatomical position before you begin inventory, so that you know exactly what is missing. This also helps when siding the bones either left or right when applicable. There are many different types of standardized inventory forms to fill out when you are taking a skeletal inventory. Here is a diagram that includes every bone of the skeleton. Use the diagram to color in the missing bones. Use the Skeletal Anatomy Inventory sheet to check off the bones you have from a list of all 206 bones.
