Course Syllabus
Course Description:
This course will provide students with the necessary clinical time required to obtain your ‘certificate of completion’ so that you may take your state exam. Students will master the 20+ skills listed in the Arizona Nursing Assistant Candidate Handbook by D&S Diversified Technologies.
Fundamental nursing skills based upon the basic nursing concepts of giving individualized resident care will be the focus in the classroom, lab, and all clinical rotations. Principles of communication, basic nutrition, basic emergency care, medical terminology, resident safety, comfort and ethical/legal aspects of health care will be taught.
Prior to attending clinicals, you must complete a verified competency check off each of the 20+ skills listed in the Arizona Nursing Assistant Candidate Handbook by D&S Diversified Technologies. It is the student’s responsibility to practice skills which may be outside of class time to become proficient. A student may contact instructor for open lab times.
Rationale:
This class prepares the student nursing assistant to take both the written and skills examination for the Arizona State Board of Nursing (AZBN). The student must pass this class and the state exam to obtain certification or licensure.
Arizona has approved D&S Diversified Technologies-Headmaster LLP to provide tests and scoring services for Nursing Assistant Testing.
Co-requisite: NUR 110, AHS 131
Pre-requisite: AHS 131, RDG 099, MAT 082, or higher, or consent of instructor (Recommended: AHS 131 prior to summer enrollment)
Course Content: Will include:
- Orientation to clinical practice settings - dependent upon facility restrictions.
- Performance of basic interventions that are appropriate to the nursing assistant role, including:
- Personal care and grooming
- Provision for urinary and bowel elimination
- Measurement of vital signs
- Observation and report of pain
- Transfers, positioning and turning of client, with proper body mechanics
- Communication with clients
- Serving and feeding clients
- Reporting observations
- Application of heat and cold therapies
- Assistance with diagnostic testing, including obtaining specimens
- Care of clients with drains, tubes, and ostomies
- Assistance with application of bandages and binders
- Provision of care for the dying client
- Assistance with admitting, transferring, and discharging of clients
- Assistance with security of personal belongings
- Recognize and report abuse, mistreatment, and neglect
- Infection control measures
Course Goals:
Prepare the student Nursing assistant to take the written and skills examination given by the Arizona State Board of Nursing and to have the appropriate number of clinical hours to apply to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA).
Course Outcomes: The student will be able to:

- Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR card.
- Health requirements including evidence of TB testing within the past year, two measles, mumps, and rubella immunizations or titer, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (TDAP) within ten years, confirmation of Varicella by titer or immunization, flu vaccine (date restricted) or documented exception. These requirements are subject to change at the discretion of Northern Arizona Healthcare.

Health Requirements and Documentation
The following records must be presented at registration. Health records are required in order for students to participate in clinical rotations. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all forms and requirements are complete throughout the program. Students are advised to keep a copy of ALL documents for their own records as they will be required to provide these to clinical agencies prior to participating in clinical rotations.
Required at time of registration:
- Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
NO OTHER is acceptable. Even if you have a more advanced form of certification or are told it is the same thing. ONLY American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
- Evidence of a current negative TB skin test.
- DPS fingerprint card
- Urine drug screen
- Flu shot for the current flu season
- TDAP
- Proof of 2 Varicella shots or positive titer read by a healthcare provider
- Proof of 2 MMR shots or positive titer read by a healthcare provider
- RDG 099, or placement test scored beyond the prerequisite course
- Math 088, or placement test scored beyond the prerequisite course
- Pre-requisite or Co-requisite AHS 131, medical terminology
To register: Bring originals* of the above listed requirements to the registration counter at 4th Street Campus. An enrollment representative will verify your information and give you authorization to enroll. Once authorized, you may register for NUR 110 & NUR 111. However, authorization does not guarantee enrollment in the class.
*Please note that the NA program does not keep any of your documents listed above.
REQUIRED TO ENTER FACILITIES:
On the morning of your clinical rotation, you MUST provide a PRINTED COPY of your negative COVID-19 result to your Clinical Instructor. If you do not have it, you DO NOT ENTER the facility. Not having your PRINTED negative COVID-19 result for your clinical instructor the morning of your clinical, it is deemed as a MISSED CLINICAL.

Clinical Grading Evaluation
Clinical skills and performance is on a graded basis. The rubric will be provided in class and NUR 111 syllabus. Satisfactory performance of all skills is required. Failure to perform all skills or failure to prove client care in a safe manner will change any grade otherwise earned to an automatic failure for the entire course.
There are a few critical skills where satisfactory completion means perfect results (i.e. vital signs). These are areas where client safety would be compromised with less than perfection. In other areas, satisfactory means performing in a SAFE and effective manner.

You must attend class and clinical rotations: The Arizona State Board of Nursing and as mandated by federal regulations require at least a full 80 hours of class time (class/seat and lab), plus at least an additional 40 hours of on the job instruction (clinical rotations), 20 hours of the clinical time being in a Long-Term Care Facility mandatory Arizona State Board of Nursing. Refer to: policy 303-02; 503-01.
Due to these strict guidelines, and the amount of material that will be presented during each class period. All required time must be documented. See Attendance policy.
Course/College Policies:
These expectations apply to each and every student.
- The instructors reserve the right to make additions, deletions, and modifications to the syllabus and course requirements with reasonable notification to the student enrolled.

Professionalism and Conduct:
Clinical Attendance and Times:
The Arizona State Board of Nursing (AZBN) and as mandated by federal regulations, requires a full 80 hours of class time (class/seat and lab), plus at least an additional 40 hours of on the job instruction (clinical rotations). (Refer to: Policy 303-02; 503-01)
- Students are expected to attend clinical as scheduled, be on time, and to be prepared for that day’s clinical assignment in order to receive the full benefit from our instructional program and to develop habits of punctuality, self-discipline and responsibility.
- Nursing Assistant instructor will be taking attendance each class period. Thisis a AZBN requirement.
- Sleeping in class or clinical, does not mean student is “present” for class, and it may be considered a “missed” class per instructor’s discretion.
- Due to the strict guidelines from AZBN, and the amount of material that will be presented during each clinical rotation, no days will be scheduled to make up any clinical hours.
- With a missed clinical day, a student may not have enough hours to fulfill Arizona State Board requirements to receive a certificate of completion.
- If the student has Financial Aid and exceeds the number of absences for a class, the Financial Aid office will be required to reduce and/or revoke financial aid due to non-attendance, and the student will owe money back. The student may also be suspended from receiving Financial Aid in future semesters for failure to attend classes this semester. It is especially important that financial aid students attend all classes so that this does not happen. Regardless of whether or not the student has Financial Aid, if the student is going to be absent from a class, inform the instructor so that there is no confusion that could lead to the student being dropped from class and/or financial aid being reduced or canceled. Per CCC policy, instructors may grant excused absences at their discretion if the student received PRIOR permission by the instructor. A health provider's statement may be requested to validate absences.
Academic Remediation
If at any time during the semester coursework a student falls below 75% academically or is considered unsafe in the clinical environment, or clinical grade is below satisfactory, the student may be considered on academic remediation. Student will make an appointment with the CNA instructor to discuss strategies to overcome difficulty.

- CNA instructor will document progress and student behaviors
- If at the end of the semester, student’s grade continues to be below 75% or does not have a passing grade in clinical, student may be dropped or withdrawn from CNA course or student may not be given certificate to test for Arizona State Board.
Grievance Policy
Following professional guidelines, if a student has a grievance the chain of communication channel should be followed. Speak to the one directly involved first, then an appointment may be made with the Director of Nursing. *Refer to addendum/policy 503-05*
Professional Behaviors
Professionalism in CNA students includes civility in the classroom, behavior that follows class rules, and giving and receiving respect from classmates and instructors. The CCC Department of Nursing follows the CCC policies/procedures on Code of Conduct and Student Discipline Procedure. *Refer to addendum and policy 503-01, 503-02*
DRESS CODE:
Personal appearance in the nursing assistant program requires close attention. Your attire reflects a professional appearance to patients, families, employees, and visitors. The standards allow for comfortable performance of duties, promotion of safety and prevention of the spread of infectious disease. Further, these dress requirements are what you will experience during your career as a nurse.
- Approved BLACK unisex scrub top, BLACK unisex scrub pants, white leather or leather like shoes, and long socks are required CCC nursing assistant uniform.
- CNA program uniforms must be clean, fit properly, and be pressed. If for any reason, an official college uniform no longer fits, is torn, damaged, or stained, you are expected to replace the uniform.
- CNA program uniforms are to be worn to every didactic class, lab session, clinical rotation, clinical orientation and college function.
- Uniforms may NOT be worn at other jobs, vocations, and/or outside functions.
- Only a white lab coat, white sweater or white jacket can be worn over the official uniform.
- Student will wear clean WHITE leather tennis or nursing shoes ONLY! Shoes must be impervious to liquids and provide reasonable protection from heavy or sharp objects. Open-toed, holed or backless shoes are prohibited.
- Ankles must be covered. You may wear hose, compression socks, or long socks. NO ankle socks will be allowed.
- Headwear can be worn for medical or religious beliefs. All other headwear is prohibited.
- Watches will be black, white, gold/silver only. NO colors.
- Jewelry and Tattoos should not detract with the functions of a nursing assistant student:
Stud earrings may be worn.
Facial piercings must be removed for the clinical setting
Tattoos must be covered completely
No earplugs/gauges.
No bracelets or necklaces.
Wedding/engagement/promise rings only.
- In the clinical setting, your ID Badge will be worn facing out, visible at all times, and above the waist. No decorative badge holder, lanyards or necklaces.
- Fingernails will be clean, and short length. NO POLISH. NO acrylic, lacquer, or gel nails allowed as they have been proven to spread pathogens.
- Hair must be clean and neat and not to extend to shoulders. Hair will be styled away from the face and properly contained off the shoulders if necessary. Facial hair must be clean, neat and well groomed. Decorative hair clips, scarves and headbands may NOT be worn.
- Smoking is prohibited in all enclosed areas at any college facility. When classes are assigned to clinical rotations, smoking is not permitted at clinical rotations. These rules also apply to electronic cigarettes.
- No perfume or cologne should be worn as they can cause allergic reactions for patients and colleagues.
- Make-up may be worn as long as it is conservatively used.

Failure to comply with the program policies on appearance will result in the student being asked to leave and the hours counted as an absence.
Cell phone/smart watches and social media use
Use of cell phones or smart watches during class and clinical experiences is prohibited, unless the student is on an institutionally sanctioned break. All cell phones must be turned off during class. Cell phones are not to be taken in to a clinical facility unless the instructor has given permission for their use to contact the instructor only. Students observed using cell phones or tablets other than what the instructor has permitted with be asked to leave, and an absence from class or clinical will be recorded. Students are forbidden to use caneras or the camera function on their phone to take photographs of any aspect of the clinical setting or experience. This includes any aspect of the resident’s or patient’s chart. Students are prohibited from posting any material or photographs of clinical settings on a form of social media. Violations will be handled via the CCC Student Discipline Policy (503-02), and the facilities privacy/HIPPA policies.
Clinical Requirements
- Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from all clinical facilities.
- Students are expected to be fully prepared for clinical experiences as outlined in each course/clinical syllabus.
- On the morning of your clinical rotation, you MUST provide a PRINTED COPY of your negative COVID-19 result to your Clinical Instructor. If you do not have it, you DO NOT ENTER the facility. - Students must be dressed in the approved CCC CNA program uniform.
- Students must adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards of practice.
- Students who exhibit unsafe, illegal, unethical, and unprofessional behavior will be immediately removed from the clinical facility, and may be removed from the CNA course program.
- Students are expected to abide by the policies and procedures of the clinical facilities.
- Cell phones or any electronic device is not permitted at any clinical rotation.
- Attendance to all clinical rotations is mandatory.
- In case of an emergency or absence the clinical instructor is to be notified at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled clinical start time.
- Students must adhere to professional boundaries with clients.
- All students are responsible for completing agency specific mandatory modules. Mandatory modules are areas of information that are deemed vital to faculty, students and other personnel working or having clinical rotation at the agency and who participate in providing direct patient care.
Personal Belongings in Clinical Setting
Space is not provided for students in clinical settings. It is recommended that students bring only the minimum personal items with them during clinical rotations. The clinical agencies and CCC are NOT responsible for lost and stolen items during clinical rotations.
Instructor Supervision in Clinical Area and Student Responsibility
- Each clinical group will have an instructor and no more than 10 students.
- Students will be assigned to a preceptor who has an assignment of residents/clients and will be with a designated preceptor at all times.
- Students will perform only those skills/tasks that they have received instruction on and the student has been signed off on those skills/tasks. Students must be work in student scope of practice at all times.
- Instructors will do rounds during the clinical experience and will make themselves available for questions, as well as, to observe and record student performance.
- Instructors will only perform activities related to the direct supervision of the students during the clinical session.
- Students may use the facility phone system to contact instructor during clinical session.
Clinical Probation
The assessment of your clinical performance is based upon the stated requirements in the clinical syllabus (NUR 111). Performance standards and corrective actions will be given in writing to the student. Any continuation of disconcerting behavior will be reviewed by a committee of nursing faculty and the Nursing Director and may be grounds for dismissal from NUR 110-111.
Circumstances Which May Lead to Immediate Dismissal of a Student includes:
- Performing any task that is not within student’s scope of practice.
- Absences accrued, in accordance with attendance policy.
- Dishonesty, including, but not limited to stealing from the CCC or clinical agency, plagiarism of papers, cheating on examinations, unauthorized possession of examination, etc.
- Unprofessional conduct: e.g. including but not limited to violations of confidentiality (HIPAA), failure to show respect for client or their significant others, peers, staff, or instructors, repeated sleeping in class. Sleeping at clinical will result in immediate dismissal of student from clinical and “F”, failing grade will be issued.
- Failure to improve unsatisfactory clinical performance after counseling.
- Performance or negligence which may cause physical or emotional jeopardy to a client. (See also Student requirements / policy on outside employment – page 12)
- Failure to report immediately a client care error to the clinical instructor and/or responsible staff nursing personnel.
- Being under the influence of alcoholic beverages, drugs which impair judgement, or illegal drugs while in the clinical setting. (See Appendix A)
- Fraudulent or untruthful charting in a medical record.
- Failure to pass skills lab check offs.
- Failure to maintain appropriate behaviors already demonstrated or learned, with consistency, while incorporating new skills and theory.
- Failure to perform safely may lead to immediate removal from clinical assignments with a grade of “F” at the discretion of the instructor.
COMMUNICATION:
It is always the student’s responsibility to provide current information. It is vital to the student’s success that the student may be reached easily. This includes current telephone numbers including home and cell phone, mailing address, and email address.
Students are required to use CANVAS for communication with their Clinical Instructor for NUR 111. It is the student’s responsibility to check Canvas daily. Private emails or text messages should not be used for program correspondence.
SNOW DAYS
Lecture/Lab
- Please check CCC website for cancellations and closures.
- It is the student’s responsibility to know whether classes are meeting.
- Set up arrangements in advance for your schedule and family care accordingly.
- Staying home with children on their snow days or sick days is an absence.
- Children or others not enrolled in the course are not allowed in the classroom per CCC policy.
- It is the student’s responsibility to know whether classes are meeting.
Clinical rotations
- Snow days declared by FUSD are not a guarantee of a day off from clinical.
- Please plan your schedule and family care accordingly.
- If CCC declares a one- or two-hour delay, clinical rotations WILL BE HELD AS SCHEDULED.
- If there is any doubt about cancellation of a clinical, the student will need to contact their clinical instructor.
- If there are community clinical rotations available, they will be cancelled only via telephone or email (Canvas – no personal email) by the instructor.

SEMESTER CALENDAR SCHEDULE:
This schedule is to be determined due to amount of students attending NUR 111 and the clinical sites available. It is the student’s responsibility to practice skills which may be outside of class time to become proficient. A student may contact instructor for open lab times.
