Instructions

Introduction

Each weekly module begins with an introduction page. It provides an overview of what is being covered that week and what is expected of each student.

Learning objectives include terms and concepts that you will be expected to master in the course. These will answer the important question: “What do I need to know for the exams?”

Check the browser requirements to make sure you are using the correct internet browser to work with Canvas most effectively.

Chapter Resources

AV lectures provide video lecture summaries of the major concepts covered in this course. Watch each of these (at least once) to become familiar with the major points and learn what you need to master.

Chapter reading assignments list chapters in the course textbook to guide your study. Use the summary sheets from the introduction page to write your own set of notes as you read.

Concept videos include short animations that reinforce many of the concepts covered in the first resources. Plan to watch these (several times) to help you master the concepts and related terms.

Discussion Boards

Discussion boards allow the instructor and students to post public questions. This gives classmates a chance to contribute or learn from one another. This discussion area is not for random off-topic conversations, private questions such as those related to grades, or content-specific issues.

If your instructor expects a reply to a classmate’s post, consider using the ABC Method:

Acknowledge something the individual stated in their post.
Build on their comment by adding personal experience, observations, or relevant course content.
Conclude with a critical thinking or Socratic question to the individual or class.

If the discussion assignment requires a citation of research to support your post, make sure you list the citation correctly. Here is an example format from the Purdue OWL website. Your citation cannot be from the required course materials (e.g., textbook).

Labs

Lab exercises may require you to upload a worksheet or image (drawing or photo) or complete a lab quiz. Read the instructions carefully to make sure you complete the assignment correctly, submit it in the correct format, and meet the due date.

Accepted file types: .pdf, .doc, .docx, or .jpg. Name your file with your name, the course number, and the lab number.

Quizzes

Practice quizzes help you confirm which terms and concepts you have mastered and which still need review. These quizzes include a variety of question formats, so review them ahead of time to get familiar with the format, depth, and time limits.

Graded quizzes assess your understanding of the module content. They follow the format used in the practice quizzes.

Conclusion

The conclusion page reminds you what you should have mastered by the end of this module and explains how this knowledge connects to future modules.

Rationale: When teaching an online class, students are expected to participate regularly. Clearly communicate expectations for participation, whether through discussions, lab submissions, quizzes, office hours, or other means.

Discussion boards provide a space for public questions. This gives classmates the opportunity to benefit from shared answers and to occasionally provide answers themselves. This space is not for random off-topic discussion or private questions.

Lab submissions may include an online lab quiz or an uploaded file. Provide clear instructions for how and when to submit assignments, acceptable formats, and late submission policies (if any).

You may choose to hold office hours. Let students know when and how office hours will take place—discussion boards, synchronous meetings, or other formats—and what you expect from their participation.
