TidyUp and Images in Question Banks

TidyUp will only see images that are stored in the Files area of the course. Embedded images in quiz questions from Question Banks are stored in the Files area of the course where the Question Bank was originally created.

Best Practices for Organization

To make management easier, upload images to a dedicated folder in Files first and then embed them in Question Bank questions.
This approach ensures you know exactly where the images are stored and makes updates or replacements easier in the future.

Classic Quizzes

Storage Location

When an image is embedded in a Question Bank question, the image is stored in the Files area of the course where the Question Bank was created. If the Question Bank is imported into a new course, the images remain in the original course’s Files area and do not transfer automatically.

Visibility in Files

You can locate these images in the original course’s Files area, often in the unfiled folder unless manually organized.

New Quizzes

Storage Location

Images embedded in Item Banks via the Rich Content Editor (RCE) are also stored in the Files area of the original course where the Item Bank was created. If questions are imported into a new course, the images will still reference the original course’s Files, potentially causing broken links.

Course Copies and Imports

When quizzes are imported into a new course, the embedded images do not automatically transfer unless manually addressed.

Workaround/Fix

To ensure images from Question Banks are accessible in the new course, you need to export the Question Bank as a quiz from the original course where it was created. To do this:

Create a new quiz in the original course.
Add all the questions from the Question Bank into the quiz.
Export the quiz from the original course.
Import the quiz into the new course.

This process ensures the image files associated with the questions appear in the Files area of the new course. After importing, organize the image files in the Files area (e.g., move them to a dedicated folder, such as QB_Chapter 1) before exporting and importing another quiz. Otherwise, the image files will remain mixed up in the unfiled folder, making them harder to manage.
